Setting up a new printer shouldn’t feel like rocket science. The HP ENVY series is designed to make printing photos, documents, and school projects seamless across all your devices. However, because most ENVY models feature minimalist designs with few (or no) physical buttons, figuring out how to trigger setup mode can be tricky.
Here is a quick, hassle-free guide to connecting your HP ENVY printer to Wi-Fi in under five minutes.
Step 1: Put Your HP ENVY in Wi-Fi Setup Mode
Before your computer or phone can talk to your printer, the ENVY needs to broadcast a discovery signal.
- For Models Without a Touchscreen (ENVY 6000 / 6400 Series): Locate the Wi-Fi button on the back of the printer (near the power button). Press and hold it for 5 seconds until the front ambient light bar starts glowing purple or pulsing blue.
- For Models With a Touchscreen (ENVY Photo / Inspire Series): Touch the screen, go to Setup (Gear Icon) > Network Setup > Restore Network Settings, and tap Yes.
Step 2: Prepare Your Phone or Computer
- Make sure your computer, iPhone, or Android device is connected to your primary home or office Wi-Fi network.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone or PC. The setup app uses Bluetooth low-energy to discover nearby ENVY printers instantly.
Step 3: Connect Using the HP Smart App
HP ENVY printers rely on the official app for initial configuration and cloud driver mapping.
- Download and open HP Smart from
123.hp.com, the App Store, or Google Play. - Tap the + (Plus Sign) or Add Printer button on the home dashboard.
- Select your HP ENVY model when it appears on screen.
- Enter your Wi-Fi password when prompted to transfer your network credentials to the printer automatically.
Step 4: Press the Information Button to Confirm
To prevent unauthorized access, HP requires physical proximity verification during setup.
Watch the printer’s control panel. When the Information button (i) starts flashing white, tap it once. This confirms you are standing next to the printer, completing the secure wireless connection.
Pro Tip: Dual-Band Wi-Fi Networks
If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under one name, ensure your phone/PC is on the 2.4 GHz band during the initial setup phase. Some older ENVY models require 2.4 GHz signaling to accept initial Wi-Fi credentials before switching to dual-band operation.
